Today in the studio blog, I want to get more “marketing conceptual.” Asking the question, is new/ out of the box, always better when photographing a product? In ads we always see products displayed as new and shiny but is this what consumers want to see? Can we show them a product with some use behind it and still get the clicks?
I think we can! And I believe that it can often be refreshing to see an image showing something a little different!
For today’s products I’m using a tube of Summer Friday’s Jet Lag Mask. What drew me to this product was the tone of blue they used on the packaging. It was a perfect complimentary color to the yellow background I had up in the studio and I knew the two colors together would just pop off the screen, and I was right ;).
The crinkled aluminum tubing created this delightful texture and reflected the light in an erratic and captivating way. I shot this with a 320 watt flash head set to 50% power and foam reflectors. I love using sheets of styrofoam to bounce light for product photography because it creates a light that’s slightly crisper than regular white bounce cards but less than silver.
As for the shots themselves I kept it simple with a top down set up, using cropping to create interesting compositions, and really show detail of the product!
So what do you think? Can we use a product that’s not fresh out of the box to create more engagement with consumer and product imagery that has more story behind it?
Thanks for reading, and happy Friday! If you ever want to talk shop or have questions about product photography or any kind of creative work, reach out. I love connecting with fellow creatives and small business owners.
